Procedure for Reasonable Housing Accommodations Requests
Under the ADA, Boise State is considered a public accommodation and may not discriminate against people with disabilities and must provide equal access by removal of physical barriers, provision of auxiliary aides, and “make reasonable changes in policies, practices and procedures to avoid discrimination.” (source: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/hq9805.html)
Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Subpart E-Postsecondary Education, Boise State may not discriminate against a student with a disability in the admissions process and must provide equal access to qualified students. Qualified means that the student, with or without accommodations, has met the University and/or program admissions requirements.
By law, students with disabilities do not have to self-disclose or register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) or University Housing. If, on the other hand, a student is seeking reasonable housing accommodations or adjustments, he/she must contact the Disability Resource Center. All housing accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis. The procedure for requesting reasonable housing accommodations is as follows:
- Student must contact the Disability Resource Center and follow the documentation process as outlined on their website. http://drc.boisestate.edu/Students/index.cfm?subsection_id=1
- Once the DRC has received all necessary documentation, they will notify University Housing if they are recommending any reasonable accommodations should be made.
- University Housing will then notify the student of their specific room assignment/accommodation via their Bronco email account within 48 business hours of receiving the recommendation from the DRC.
Note:
* Reasonable housing accommodations will be granted for only one (1) academic year. Students will need to request accommodations for each subsequent year during the room renewal period.
**It is recommended that students requesting reasonable accommodations do so as soon as they apply for housing. Due to the increased demand for on campus housing, and the rapid rate of assignment, it is imperative that University Housing have the information they need to make accommodations as early on in the assignment process as possible. NON-DISCRIMINATION
Boise State University is an equal opportunity institution and offers its living accommodations without regard to sex, race, color, national origin, ancestry, veteran status, political affiliation or disability (as provided for in Title IV and Title IX and sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973). It is the policy of the University to not discriminate against any individual on the basis of sexual orientation in the following areas: personnel decisions, housing, student admissions and evaluation, facilities, or in educational programs or other activities.[back]
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK
University Housing residents must abide by all local, state, and federal laws along with University Housing policies and procedures. Residents or applicants who have criminal convictions may have their application denied or be removed from housing facilities. Registered sex offenders must comply with reporting requirements by contacting the University Housing Office and reporting to the Associate Director for University Housing, prior to moving in. Students who are convicted after they have moved into a University Housing facility, must notify Housing of their conviction immediately.
University Housing conducts criminal background checks of all live-in employees.
